Ocean Guard™ Coated Pilings

Product Specifications & Performance Data

Ocean Guard™ Coated Pilings are protected using Specguard® marine-grade coating systems, engineered specifically to endure the harsh marine environment and provide long-term protection for piles, fenders, buoys, and other structures exposed to constant saltwater immersion, UV exposure, and physical abrasion. Specguard’s marine-grade formulations use components not found in standard polyurea products, providing the foundation for long-term durability in demanding marine conditions.

Coating System

The standard coating system applied to Ocean Guard™ Coated Pilings is Specguard’s SL-08 marine-grade polyurea. SL-08 is a slow-cure, PTMEG-based, 100% solids spray polyurea system with a tack-free time of 8–10 minutes and strong self-leveling properties due to its extended gel time. The slower cure profile allows for improved adhesion to timber, steel, and other pile substrates, along with better penetration when applied over encapsulating fabrics. SL-08 is used across a range of marine applications including treated timber piling, steel piling, marine fenders, and composite and steel buoys, with a proven record of long-term durability in marine environments.

Application & Coverage

Following industry guide specifications for encapsulation of marine piling, the coating is applied at an average thickness of 250 mils (¼ inch) across all specified surface areas, with coverage extending to a minimum of 3 feet below the mud line and 8 feet above Mean Higher High Water (MHHW), consistent with standard marine piling coverage requirements. Minor surface pinholes (fewer than 3 per linear foot) are permitted, provided none penetrate to bare substrate.

Performance Characteristics

  • Corrosion & Water Sealing: Designed to penetrate deep and seal out corrosion and water, adhering to concrete, steel, wood, and foam substrates. Us
  • Durability: Provides a proven history of long-term performance and durability in marine environments. Us
  • Environmental Safety: Once cured, the coating does not leach substances into the surrounding environment. Us
  • Abrasion & Impact Resistance: Formulated to resist abrasion, impact, and marine borer damage over the life of the installation.
  • UV & Weathering Stability: Contains UV stabilizers, anti-oxidants, and adhesion promoters suited to long-term outdoor and submerged exposure.

Color Options

Standard coating colors include Black, Tan, Brown, and Gray. Black and earth-tone colors are recommended, as lighter colors are more prone to UV-related fading over time; color variation does not affect the coating’s functional performance or service life.

Field Repair

For touch-up and post-installation repairs, Specguard offers a compatible two-component field repair product, applied and troweled to the appropriate thickness, allowing damaged sections to be restored without recoating the entire pile.
